Reading

In Reception, the children are sent home two reading books every Friday. One book is based on your child’s phonics knowledge and will only contain sounds that your child knows and is confident with. This book is to be read by your child and will develop their ability to read words and sentences.

The second book is a shared reader. This book has been carefully selected based on its vocabulary. As the children in Reception are beginning their journey with reading, they are unable to develop their comprehension skills whilst blending sounds to read words. Therefore, we need to share stories with our children to continue to develop their comprehension skills. This is why we ask you to read the shared reader alongside the prompt questions which will support your child in developing their understanding of the story.

Please read as often as you can with your child. However, we do suggest that you listen to and read to your child at least five times a week.
